A comprehensive introduction to fundamental principles with practical applications.

This graduate textbook starts with the Maxwell equations and derives in a tutorial way, step-by-step the most relevant ultrafast laser physics concepts.

Within 12 Chapters, 800 pages this book gives the basics of short pulse propagation and generation with examples from ultrafast diode-pumped solid-state lasers and some more limited background info on dye lasers and optical pumped semiconductor lasers. Note that  a comprehensive treatment of ultrafast fiber lasers and attosecond pulse generation is not included in this book (there are other colleagues who should do these topics).

This book covers the following topics:

  • Linear and nonlinear pulse propagation
  • Dispersion compensation
  • Laser rate equations, relaxation oscillations, transfer functions
  • Saturable absorbers, SESAM
  • Q-switching, active and passive modelocking
  • Pulse duration measurement, noise characterization
  • Optical frequency combs
