High-Field Laser Physics

Enlarged view: going away party
Going away party for Howard Reiss on 10. June 2010, after his stay as a visiting Professor at ETH from Feb. to June 2010

The lectures will examine those aspects of classical and quantum electrodynamics that are not normally part of the preparation of an AMO (atomic, molecular, and optical) physicist, but that are fundamental for understanding strong-field phenomena. This includes the behavior of free electrons with laser fields, both classically and quantum mechanically.

Info

Prof. Howard Reiss will give the lecture of High-Field Laser Physics during the semester FS 2010.

Lecture: Wednesday from 12.45 till 14.30 in the room HIT F 11.1
Exercises: Wednesday from 14.45 till 15.30 always in HIT F 11.1

Papers

DownloadProg. Quant. Electr. 16, 1 (1992) (PDF, 4.7 MB)
This is a resource paper for strong-fields in general. Many fundamentals are presented here in detail, especially for a relativistic formulation. However, the review of the applications is many years out of date.

The discussion of the basic time scales in this paper is directly related to later treatment in class of tunneling properties.

DownloadPhys. Rev. Lett. 101, 043002 (2008) (PDF, 226 KB)
This paper is directly related to the basic matter of limitations on the dipole approximation; a topic not properly discussed in most textbooks.
