SESAM parameters

Key design parameters: magnitude and phase of the optical absorption and reflection

SESAM parameters are important for proper laser performance:

saturation fluence: energy level where the device saturates
modulation depth: fully saturated nonlinear reflectivity change
nonsaturable loss: loss of a fully saturated SESAM - should be as small as possible
temporal response: how fast the absorber recovers.

The optical characteristics of the modulation depth, saturation fluence, and non-saturable loss are key for proper laser performance.

Measured nonlinear reflectivity as a function of incident pulse fluence on a typical SESAM. Theoretical fit determines the macroscopic saturable absorber parameters: saturation fluence Fsat,A, modulation depth ΔR and nonsaturable loss ΔRns. (Fig. 2.1.9, p. 134, from Book Chapter Landolt Börnstein)
